Parade Route: Starts at Woodward/Kirby, right in front of the DIA, heads down Woodward to Congress. TV zone is at Woodward/Grand River

If you are taking your child home directly from the parade, please send in a note to be given to the bus chaperone. Our dispersal area is right near the Spirit of Detroit statue, Woodward & Larned. Please meet with your student and one of the chaperons so that we can ensure they are with you and will get home safely.

The best way to dress for the parade is in layers, specifically a wicking layer and an insulating layer. WATCH THE WEATHER FORECAST TO DETERMINE HOW MANY LAYERS YOU MIGHT NEED!!

Wicking Layer: This is the layer worn next to your skin, usually consisting of long underwear.

  • Look for thermal underwear made of a synthetic- usually polyester- fiber that has a “wicking” power. This means the fibers will wick (move) moisture away from your skin and pass it through the fabric so that it will evaporate. This keeps you warm, dry & comfortable. Silk is also a good, natural fabric that has wicking abilities.
  • Even though it’s cold, you will sweat- especially if you’re marching the 3 miles down the parade route.

Insulating Layer: This layer includes sweaters, sweatshirts, etc. The purpose of this layer is to keep heat in and cold out, which is accomplished by trapping air between the fibers.

  • Fleece, a synthetic material which maintains an insulating ability even when wet and spreads the moisture out so it dries quickly.
  • Wool, which naturally wicks moisture away

Protection layer– your uniform is designed to help block the wind, and allows for perspiration to evaporate.

Cotton is a no-no! Cotton is great for towels, because cotton soaks up and retains moisture. That’s precisely why cotton is all wrong for parade day. It absorbs moisture (snow, rain, sweat) and retains it. When the wind blows, you will get very, very cold. Cotton = BAD!

Headwear: Up to 60% of your body’s heat can escape from an uncovered head. The uniform hats/berets will offer some protection, but a thin winter hat/earmuffs will also be beneficial.

Color Gaurd Thankgiving Day Parade Needs

Hello, everyone!
I just wanted to send out this e-mail to give some information on what will be needed for the Thanksgiving day parade.

First, we will have two mandatory practices before the parade. One on Wednesday, November 18th and another on Monday, November 23rd. Both of these practices will be from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Meet in the band room (come in door 6). Wednesday is supposed to be slightly warmer; therefore, rehearsal may be held outside if possible so that the students can practice spinning while bundled up since they aren’t used to spinning with layers on. If there are any schedule conflicts I will need a parent/guardian to notify me via e-mail.

Second, gloves are being ordered for each color guard member. These gloves are being ordered specifically for color guard and will have sure-grip on them. The gloves will be larges so that the students can layer up underneath if needed, but the ordered gloves MUST be worn on the outermost layer. Those will cost $2.50 and that money will need to be turned in to Mr. Schoenherr by Thanksgiving at the latest.
Third, each student will need to purchase a generic Santa hat. These can be purchased from most stores. If the student already owns a plain Santa hat, they are more than welcome to use that instead of purchasing a new one. The link below is an example of what the student will need: http://www.kmart.com/disney-deluxe-santa-hat/p-009W037151411004P
Lastly, the color guard will be wearing red sweaters for the parade. Each student will need to go to a store, such as K-Mart, and purchase their own. It will need to be a plain RED sweater that looks like the sweater in the following link: http://www.kmart.com/hanes-ultimate-cotton-reg-crewneck-adult-sweatshirt/p-046VA58078112P?sid=KDx01192011x000001&gclid=CNyEwt2mjskCFVU2aQodAb0BgQ
***Please be sure to buy a larger size than usual when purchasing the sweater. It will be cold and the students will need to layer up quite a bit underneath that sweater to stay warm during the parade.***
The students will be required to wear the black shoes that they wore with their uniform, the red sweatshirt in the link above, the red Santa hat, and the black uniform pants that they used for the Fall season. They will want to layer up underneath the pants as well (long john’s, leggings, etc.)
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Caitlyn Kliest

Polar Pizza Party Book Donations Needed

We are in need of Children’s book donations for the Polar Pizza Party. We had such a large turn-out last year we depleted most of our supply. Also, if any one has any old scrapbooking paper punches they no longer use and would like to donate for the craft area that would also be appreciated. Donations can either be brought to the Band Boosters meeting or the band room marked Polar Pizza Party.  Thank-You!!!
